7 Keys to Guide Leaders, and Individuals to Optimize the Day

We live in a tough, competitive, and complex world. Achieving success in business is getting harder, and every minute counts. However, leadership can make all the difference in the success of the organization. Leaders can supply people with a competitive edge by demonstrating, and coaching discipline, holding people accountable, and leading by example. Strategies like focusing on early successes, setting goals, and habits, effective time management, and handling unforeseen challenges calmly and professionally can support our journey of optimizing our day. Developing discipline is critical to achieving daily goals and priorities. At the end of the day, our aim is to achieve maximum productivity, and results. Here are some key factors that can help you and your teams optimize your day.

  1. Mindset and Early Successes: To optimize our day, it’s important to start with a positive and growth mindset. We have the power to take charge of our day and be positive with a desire to learn and improve. Leaders who demonstrate and encourage this mindset and promote early successes can give their employees a competitive edge. Early wins can create a domino effect, leading to even more successes. Examples of early wins in the book, “Win the 16: Principles and Strategies to Optimize your Day” include taking a morning walk, working on a priority or goal, accomplishing a task, spending time on professional development, exercising, or reading a self-help book. These small victories can help us start our day on a positive note and build momentum for even greater achievements.
  1. Goals and Habits: By setting well-thought-out and strategic goals daily, we can gain clarity on what needs to be accomplished and pave the way towards achieving success. When we are motivated to attain our goals, they become easier to accomplish. However, motivation is not always consistent, which highlights the importance of habits in our lives. For leaders, it is important to model the significance of setting daily goals and forming habits, making it a standard practice within their organization. This will inspire employees to follow suit, especially when they witness leaders practicing what they preach. Tips for effective goal setting include ensuring that goals are strategic, authentic to the individual, measurable, achievable (not easy), schedule built in to check on the progress, and accountable for the goals set. Leaders should ask themselves and their employees what habits they will adopt to achieve their goals each day? While, it may seem simple, consistent implementation of these practices can be challenging for some. Ultimately, habits will be the driver of attaining goals. Accountability will be critical to ensuring impact on our daily goals and habits.
  1. Time Management: Time is a valuable resource, yet it often feels like it’s slipping away from us. With clients calling, bosses scheduling meetings, and unforeseen challenges arising, it can be difficult to manage our time effectively. As leaders, the first step in supporting ourselves and our teams is taking ownership of our time. It’s important to remember that being busy should not be a badge of honor. Also, if you are the leader consistently running late for meetings this sends a negative message and questions your ability to manage your time. Here are some strategies from “Win the 16” book to help us regain control of our time and focus on our priorities and goals:
    – Prioritize completing the most important tasks or goals by 10am
    – Learn to say “no” to activities that don’t align with your priorities
    – Schedule specific times to check emails and texts
    – Plan the day in advance and own it

– Avoid multitasking as much as possible

– Chart your day for 24 hours to understand where you spend your time

When leaders model effective time management skills, it sets a positive example for the team to follow. By helping team members develop this skill, we can become more productive and achieve our goals more efficiently. A key is the emphasis required by leaders on the skill, time management.

  • Unforeseen challenges and obstacles: They are bound to happen at some point in our days and weeks, and it’s important to be prepared for them. This is another reason why it’s critical to win our waking hours early in the day. When these challenges arise, it’s important to take a step back, take some deep breaths, adjust our mindset, and remain calm. We can then reshuffle our day to course correct and move in the right direction. As leaders, we have the power to either contribute to handling situations calmly and professionally or not. It’s important to lead by example and demonstrate our ability to handle these moments with grace. True leadership is demonstrated during difficult times, not just when things are running smoothly.

  • Discipline: Can we optimize our day without discipline? NO. It is a critical aspect of optimizing our day. With so many distractions and challenges, it can be difficult to stay on track and maintain focus on our priorities. However, discipline is a skill that can be improved upon. The ability to resist temptation and distractions is essential to maintaining our focus and drive throughout the day. One way to improve discipline as a skill is to set small, achievable goals that challenge us to step out of our comfort zone. For example, if we use sugar in our coffee daily we could eliminate it for a week, reading a self-help book for 15 minutes every day for ten days if we don’t do that commonly or exercising every day if that’s not a norm. These small changes can help us develop the skill of discipline needed to stay focused and achieve our goals. By consistently demonstrating discipline, we can improve our productivity and achieve greater success in our personal and professional lives. Another skill that leaders need to lead by example, and make it a prerequisite for being part of your team.

  • Mind and body: Taking care of our minds and bodies is another important aspect of creating a productive day. As the day progresses, our cognitive ability and energy levels can decline, making it difficult to lead our teams effectively. It’s important for leaders to lead by example and support their team members in taking care of themselves. Win the 16 book has an entire chapter dedicated to a healthy Lifestyle. The book does discuss the importance of getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, minimizing stress, cutting out negative people from our lives, engaging in some form of exercise, and continuing to learn and grow. When leaders demonstrate the importance of self-care and encourage their employees to prioritize it, they build trust within the team. Trust is a critical component of effective leadership, and when employees know that their leaders care about their well-being, they are more likely to trust them. By prioritizing self-care, leaders can create a positive and productive work environment that supports the success of the team. This could help people continue to progress, and achieve results at 3pm just as they did at 10am because they have the energy and mindset.

  • Scoreboard: At the end of the day, it’s important to evaluate our productivity and accomplishments. I call this the scoreboard. Leaders who can honestly reflect on their day and evaluate what they accomplished, including which goals and priorities were achieved, are setting themselves up for success. It’s not just about working hard; it’s about being productive and optimizing our day. By honestly reflecting on our day, we can evaluate how much impact we made and identify areas for improvement. This habit can also be implemented with our teams, encouraging them to evaluate their productivity and accomplishments. Even if the results of the day weren’t what we desired, acknowledging that fact is still an accomplishment. By applauding ourselves and our teams for identifying the results of the day, we can create a positive environment that motivates us to double down and be more productive tomorrow. The scoreboard is a simple yet effective daily habit that can help us optimize our day and achieve greater success.

Conclusion

Leaders possess the power to act. Despite the challenges, the world provides everyone with a chance for success, which is seldom handed to us. By concentrating on enhancing our everyday actions, we can have a profound realization. Taking small steps can lead to extraordinary outcomes, and it all commences with our daily decisions and actions.
