nWhy would K.C. be digging in the garden? That’s what Mom wanted to know. It led to a series of questions, starting with: “Why are you digging up the garden?” Each of K.C.’s answers lead to another question as the young boy shares his new knowledge about apples, how they grow and how to start growing one’s own apple tree. K.C. even has a chart to show the cycle from seed to tree to flower to apple to seed. And right in the middle is the most important part of the cycle of the apple: apple pie. Of course, every apple leads to an apple pie and Mom has one ready for an afternoon snack.Once again, Carol Basdeo has created a fun way to learn about science. She’s chosen a topic that so many of us, children and adults, take for granted: the apple. Where did it come from; how did it grow; important questions that lead to interesting answers in her colorful and fun picture book, K.C. and Kayla’s Science Corner: The Life Cycle of an Apple. Siblings K.C. and Kayla are active young people with inquisitive minds. The nice thing about this book is it not only teaches young readers about a scientific marvel – the life cycle of apples – it also presents a family sharing of ideas, something sadly lacking in today’s fast-action, computer techie world. K.C. is encouraged by his mother to share what he has learned at school and Kayla is just as interested as Mom in learning what K.C. has learned. A fun and intuitive way to teach science as well as instilling a good sense of family values into the story.
